You’re never alone with a Rhino

8” x 13”
2020

I started this painting inspired by a landscape by Moriko Mori but instead of blue elven creatures I decided to use favourite cartoon characters like Rupert Bear. The rhino is a reference to Ionesco’s Theatre of the Absurd. This avant-garde drama is about an upsurge in Fascism, conformity and mob mentality. At a time of Brexit and lockdown this seemed appropriate. Alice gives the clue to the upside-down quality and impossible sizes of the various creatures. The unicorn is a reference to Trump, Dominic Cummings and conspiracy theories. The inclusion of a WW2 plane represents how unscrupulous politicians use nostalgia for the War for their own devious devices.
