Paintings done to a pre-determined formula.

16″ x 24″
Acrylic painting on board

In this early painting I was partly inspired by Hans Arp who used chance in his work and Tom Phillips who influenced the format.

I used a system relating letters of the alphabet in the title to various paint techniques in numbered squares. A line drawing followed a similar pattern over the top. At the time I was making Concrete Poems: a poem to the power of 3, for instance had three verses of three lines with three words per line, from the third book, three shelves down, three pages in etc.

There is a record of the colours used in each column at the top and at the bottom there is a record of the colours used in the line drawing; which again is worked out to a pre determined formula.
